University of Nicosia Ranks in Top 251-300 among “Young” Universities Globally
UNIC joins the list of the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger, according to the 2021 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings
The 2021 results of the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings rank the University of Nicosia (UNIC) among the Top 251-300 universities in the world that are 50 years old or younger. Correspondingly, UNIC ranks among the Top 110 Young Universities in Europe.
The Young University Rankings use the same (though slightly recalibrated) performance indicators as the flagship THE World University Rankings (WUR) to assess institutions across their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. This tenth annual edition of the table features universities from 68 territories across Europe, Asia, Oceania, North America, Latin America, and Africa.
The University of Nicosia now joins the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology in this particular ranking, indicative of the rapid development of the university field in Cyprus, which boasts three of the Top 1000 universities in the world, according to Times Higher Education.
The results of the Young University Rankings are the latest in a succession of recent distinctions bestowed on UNIC by Times Higher Education, possibly the best-known university rankings agency in the world. Along with its inclusion in the Top 1000 universities in the wold (THE WUR table), UNIC was recognised by the 2021 THE Emerging Economies Rankings (Top 201-250 universities in the countries or regions classified by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE Group as “Emerging”); the 2021 THE World University Rankings by Subject (#1 in Cyprus and Greece, Top 100 in the EU, and Top 301-400 universities in the world in Business and Economics); and the 2021 THE Impact Rankings (number 32 in the world in the core area of Quality Education).
Overall, the universities classified as “Young” by THE are characterised by their agility and ability to innovate, displaying remarkable growth potential compared to many older universities around the world that are ranked in the THE World University Rankings.
“UNIC is a prime example of a young university’s dynamic growth. Since achieving university status in 2007, UNIC has been continuously expanding upon its ranking achievements, becoming the largest university in Southern Europe that teaches primarily in English, now serving over 14,000 students from across the globe”, noted Professor Dimitris Drikakis, Vice President of Global Partnerships.
Continuing in that vein, the Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, underlined that prospective students now have a compelling choice of quality university education in Cyprus, given the steady evolution of the country into an international centre for quality Higher Education:
“This latest ranking achievement is another milestone in the history of our University and the country at large. Cyprus has a relatively short 30-year history in University Education, yet already three of the island’s universities are now recognised among the top Young Universities worldwide. This is impressive to say the least”.
Rector Pouyioutas concluded by thanking the people that have been instrumental in this and all other major achievements, especially during this particularly challenging period:
“I would like to wholeheartedly thank, once more, the entire University community, including the teaching, research, and administrative personnel, as well as our students and alumni, who continue to propel us forward to ever greater milestones”.
The University of Nicosia would like to congratulate the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology for their respective placements in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.
