Webinar 9: Ethics in PhD Studies: Guidelines and the role of the University Research Ethics Committee
The current presentation aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ethical considerations integral to doctoral research. It will emphasize the importance of adhering to ethical guidelines throughout the research process, highlighting the significance of maintaining integrity, honesty, and respect for participants’ rights including informed consent.
The role of the University Research Ethics Committee (UREC) is thoroughly examined, elucidating its responsibilities in overseeing the ethical dimensions of research conducted within the institution. This includes reviewing research proposals, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and providing guidance to researchers on ethical dilemmas they may encounter. In addition to emphasizing the importance of ethical principles, the presentation provides comprehensive guidelines for completing all necessary forms and adhering to the correct processes.
By elucidating these principles and the pivotal role of UREC, the presentation equips PhD students with the necessary knowledge and resources to navigate ethical challenges ethically and responsibly, thereby fostering a culture of integrity and professionalism in academic research.

Dr Christina Hajisoteriou
Associate Professor, Department of Education, School of Education
Dr Christina Hajisoteriou is an Associate Professor in Intercultural Education at the University of Nicosia. She is the Vice Director of the UNESCO Chair of the University of Nicosia focusing on ‘Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue for a Culture of Peace’. She was awarded a first-class honours BA in Primary Education (best graduate of the year) by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She received annual curriculum awards by the Greek Foundation of National Scholarships. In 2006, she received her MPhil (Thesis Grade A) in Educational Research with specialisation in Intercultural Education from the University of Cambridge. In 2009, she received her PhD in Education concentrating on Intercultural Education by the University of Cambridge. Her PhD research was funded by Leventis Foundation via the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust. In 2012, she completed her post-doctoral research on ‘The Europeanisation of intercultural education – The case of Cyprus’ co-funded by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Regional Development Fund through the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus. She has been a co-recipient of more than 5 million euros in funding mainly from the EU. She published or edited 7 books and more than 80 articles and chapters. In 2016, Palgrave-Macmillan published her book The Globalisation of Intercultural Education: The Politics of Macro-Micro Integration’with Prof. Angelides. Her latest book ‘Student voices for inclusion and interculturalism’ with Prof. Angelides was published in 2023 by Diadrasi Publishers.
Dr Stella A. Nicolaou
Associate Professor, Department of Life Sciences, School of Life and Health Sciences
Dr Stella A. Nicolaou is an Associate Professor of Immunology at the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Nicosia and the Coordinator of the BSc of Human Biology. Dr Nicolaou holds a BSc in Medical Technology from the University of Indianapolis, USA, a PhD in Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine by the University of Cincinnati, USA and a PgCert HBE by SGUL. She is currently the Chair of the University of Nicosia Research Committee (UREC) and she was an appointed member of the Review Bioethics Committee for Biomedical and Clinical Research B from 2015-2021 by the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee. She has previous experience with grant writing and research projects in biomedical science education and immunology. Currently, her active research interests focus on (a) education research as it relates to the teaching and assessment of students in biomedical sciences and (a) basic and epidemiological research relating to food allergies. She has participated in research projects related to those areas and the projects were funded both by the EU as well as locally. Her work has been published in international conference proceedings and refereed academic journals of Immunology and Medical Education.
