Call for Applications for the Master (MSc) in Counselling Psychology
The University of Nicosia announces the opening of fifteen (15) positions for admission to the Master (MSc) in Counselling Psychology for the Fall 2020 semester of the academic year 2020-2021.
The M.Sc. program in Counseling Psychology aims to train students on how to integrate theory and research into practice. With a holistic approach on training and practice, the programs’ objectives are to encourage and facilitate students’ personal and professional identity development based on academic knowledge and strong ethical and professional values. Trainees learn to critically evaluate and assimilate knowledge using a variety of theoretical viewpoints from different fields in psychology and to apply this information and skills to practice effectively with different populations. Upon completion of their studies in this program, students will acquire knowledge on how to be consumers of research by developing competency on how to efficaciously use and apply research in practice, but they also have the option to become producers of research in conjunction with their practical training.
Upon successful completion of the program, students should be able to:
- Critically evaluate the major theories and philosophies within the selected fields in Counselling Psychology.
- Critically assess their own personal philosophy of human beings as well as their strengths and weaknesses as they impact the counselling process.
- Demonstrate skills in assessing and evaluating the counselling process in the context of everyday challenges, and to develop competencies in different communication skills.
- Have an enhanced insight of the wide diversity represented by individuals of different cultures, gender, ethnicity, races, religions, ages, physical/mental status, and other groups.
- Become exposed to a wide range of populations having a variety of problems through participation in supervised clinical training experiences, both in the State and in the Private Sector.
- Demonstrate flexibility in their role as counselling psychologists according to the needs of the population they work with (e.g. individuals, groups, couples) and the task they have to accomplish.
- Assess the dynamics of the group processes to the person’s interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics and interactions.
- Demonstrate knowledge in the design and use of different preventive and therapeutic methods in their work with people with various problems.
- Acquire training in the selection, application, and interpretation of clinical and Psychometric assessment techniques and methods as well as in the understanding and application of the results following professional standards.
- Critically evaluate research in the different areas of counselling, demonstrate ability to ask scientific questions relevant to Counseling Psychology, design and conduct research in order to answer these questions.
- Evidence knowledge in the use of different research methodologies in Counselling and exhibit skills in the use of data analysis methods.
- Conduct themselves with professionalism, demonstrating deep knowledge and understanding of professional standards and work ethics and their application to real life situations.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
Academic Qualifications: An accredited Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and official Transcript.
Application Form: Applicants must submit an application form for admission and start the enrolment process to the program. The application form requests general information about the applicant, their qualifications, relevant experience etc.
Curriculum Vitae: a complete CV specifying all academic and professional activities.
Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must obtain two (2) recommendation letters from professors who are familiar with their academic work. The needed recommendation letter template can be requested from [email protected]
English Language Proficiency: TOEFL (paper-based test 600, computer-based test 250, internet-based test 100), IELTS 6.5, IGCSE B or NEPTON level ENGL-101. For students who graduated from an English-speaking University, English language is not a requirement.
Other Qualifications:Such as publications, relevant seminars attended, previous practical experience etc.
Statement of Purpose: Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive outline highlighting their academic and individual competencies and state why they believe they are suitable for admission to the program, as well as their reflections regarding the expectations and value of the program for their personal advancement and career development.
Individual Interviews:Having reviewed each application and applicant’s suitability against the entry criteria, an Interview Committee will determine which applicant may proceed to the interview. Interviews will be conducted in person or via Skype where required.
Final Evaluation: In view of the limited number of applicants to be admitted to the program, the Interview Committee will decide on the basis of merit and by evaluating specific criteria who are the most suitable candidates to be admitted to the program.
Application Fee: An application fee of €55 (non-refundable) will need to be paid upon submission of the application. Alumni of the University of Nicosia are exempted from this.
