Dr Pavlos Anastasiades
Pavlos Anastasiades is a member of the Diplomatic Service of the Republic of Cyprus, having joined it in April 1991 after years in the academic world. He is currently stationed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia where, since 2013, has served as Head of Policy Planning and, later, Internal Analysis/Information.
Prior to that, he was posted to Washington D.C. as Ambassador of Cyprus to the United States, with parallel accreditations as Cyprus High Commissioner to Canada and as Representative of Cyprus to various international organizations, such as the World Bank, IMF, OAS and ICAO. Before going to Washington in 2010, he had been posted to Stockholm in 2005 as Ambassador of Cyprus to Sweden, with parallel accreditations to Norway and Latvia.
During 2003-2005, he was the Head of the Diplomatic Office of the Foreign Minister in Nicosia, after spending the year before at CFSP and EU Division at the Ministry. At the beginning of his diplomatic career (1991-93), he had served at the Ministry’s Political–Cyprus Question Division. Other postings abroad included terms at the Cyprus Embassy in Washington (1993-1997) and Stockholm (1997-2002).
He has represented Cyprus and/or participated, including as speaker, at various international conferences and meetings while he continues to frequently take part in a wide range of academic, political, social and cultural events in Nicosia and elsewhere. In addition to his mother tongue (Greek), he is fluent in English and has a working knowledge of French and some of Swedish.
Pavlos was born in Famagusta and graduated from the Famagusta A’ Gymnasium in June 1971. After his two-year national military service, he attended Kettering College in Britain where he took his GCE A-Levels. He then read Psychology at the University of Birmingham, graduating with a BSc Honours First Class, in 1977 and followed with PhD research at the same University. For ten years thereafter (1981-1991), he was at the University of Oxford holding the post of Senior Scientific Research Officer, where he authored or co-authored several academic articles published in peer-reviewed international journals.
