On 16th April 2024, the Diplomatic Academy, in partnership with the United Kingdom’s Defence Academy co-organised a half-day event at the UNESCO Amphitheatre. The theme focused on the “Visit of Advanced Command & Staff Course, UK Defence Academy – Regional Geopolitics and the Role of Cyprus”.
The event was well-attended by military personnel, academics, and government officials from several countries. Key speeches included:
- Opening remarks, HE High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Cyprus, Irfan Siddiq OBE.
- “Crisis Management and Plan ALMATHEA”, Theodoros Gotsis, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Cyprus.
- “Defence and security challenges for the Republic of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean”, Major Phedon Phedonas, Ministry of Defence, Republic of Cyprus.
- “Strategic importance of the UK/Republic of Cyprus Relationship”, Andrew Wilson, Head of Political, United Kingdom High Commission.
- “UK and Republic of Cyprus relationship in the military context,” Colonel Victoria Reid, Defence Advisor.
- “Cyprus geopolitical role in the shifting regional security complexes of the Eastern Mediterranean”, Dr Constantinos Adamides, Diplomatic Academy Director, University of Nicosia
