The Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, participated in an official ceremony held at the historic University of Salamanca in Spain on September 18, 2018 and signed the Magna Charta Universitatum.
The Magna Charta Universitatum is a document that was signed by 388 rectors and heads of universities from all over Europe and beyond on 18 September 1988, the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna. Since 1988, it has been signed by many more Universities, 889 in total, from 88 Countries. It contains principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as a guideline for good governance and self-understanding of universities.
The Rector remarked that he was particularly proud to have participated in this ceremony, since this signature confirms the adherence of the University of Nicosia to global academic principles and values that are not limited to academic freedom and autonomy, but include, amongst others, transparency, meritocracy, inclusion, acceptance of diversity, multiculturalism and collegial solidarity. The inclusion of the University of Nicosia in the network of universities that have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum is yet another guarantee for the safeguarding its academic culture.
