Research Centres and Institutes
Through its participation in various research projects, as a partner or coordinator, UNIC has developed a broad base of knowledge and expertise in terms of producing research, as well as the management of the entire research process. UNIC scientists focus on exploring modern challenges, including new technological and scientific advancements, as well as the humanities and social sciences. In fact, our teaching and research staff excel in many subject areas and are acknowledged for their broad contribution to the creation and advancement of knowledge and technology transfer.
The Lab critically approaches art and design historical research and explores how it can be applied to creative practices and theory that respond to contemporary challenges. Through a network of collaborations and critically informed projects and activities, the Lab generates scholarly research and cultivates a culture of research in art and design for postgraduate students and early career researchers.
The AI Lab is a team of professors, graduate and under-graduate students, researchers and collaborators working on research problems and teaching courses that are related to Artificial Intelligence. The AI Lab is established at the Computer Science Department of the University of Nicosia.
Bioactive Molecules Research Center (BioMoReC)
BioMoReC is a unique center in Cyprus, that uses modern processes to discover and develop bioactive molecules, to enhance the drug development endeavors of the pharmaceutical industry and support the wider scientific academic community in Cyprus. The Center facilitates and support a continuum of research and development activities from discovery and characterization of bioactive molecules to development, regulation and evidence based clinical application both for human and veterinary purposes. It contributes to bridge the gap between basic drug research and clinical applications using existing research potential and existing know-how in pharmaceutical development and quality accreditation promoting the level of pharmaceutical and medical research at national level.
CENIBRE aims to investigate the nervous system in health and disease, and develop novel preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to improve neurological and mental health. An interdisciplinary approach, a unique mix of expertise, the application of state-of-the-art technologies and innovative data analysis will be the main attributes of the Centre.
Centre of Communication Studies and Research
The Centre of Communication Studies and Research (CCSR) is the University of Nicosia’s Department of Communications research unit. Research is an integral part of the Department of Communications and through CCSR it seeks to engage with the most significant developments within the field. CCSR focuses specifically on advancing research across the disciplines of communications, journalism, public relations and strategic communications.
The Centre of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (CEDI) is a multidisciplinary research and policy centre consisting of scientists, administrative staff, that have research and/or professional expertise in matters of gender equity, diversity, and inclusion.
CEDI aspires to promote a culture of inclusion, equity, and pluralism, while promoting gender mainstreaming, respecting diversity, and maintaining a working, learning, and healthy social environment, in which the rights and dignity of humans are respected.
Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility Centre
The Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility Centre (CSRC) aims to develop knowledge, skills, competences, and create awareness, innovative thinking and solutions on themes considered as material for Business, the State, Society and all stakeholders at large. The foundations of the governing and working approach to be carried out by CSRC are Ethics, Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Transparency. CSRC approaches the major challenges that Business Leaders are facing, in a synergic and inclusive approach, mindset and thinking, and assists in the creation of partnerships, community engagement, shared leadership, social entrepreneurship as key factors for impact investment, social cohesion, environmental resilience and long-lasting business sustainability. Acknowledging the forthcoming business and societal transformations needed for achieving a sustainable future for all, CSRC delivers shared value for its stakeholders through its applied and pioneering research on Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility Strategy, Sustainable Corporate Governance, Sustainable Financing & Value Creation, and Impact Analysis and Measurement.
DSRI’s mission is to undertake research and training activities on defence and security in collaboration with partners in government; industry; and other academic and research centres nationally and internationally.
The Environmental Health (EH) Research Centre is guided by the underlying principles of One Health and recognizes the intrinsic and complex connection between the health of people, biodiversity and the environment.
Gender and Law Research Group
The Gender and Law Research Group has a particular focus in the prominent fields of gender and women’s rights. Key issues include gender-based violence (both domestic violence within a family system, or violence and abuse in a certain international regime). In this respect they also include women’s rights as human rights; as well the inclusion and non-discrimination of women in the labor market, and equality in the society at large.
Gnosis aims to advance the science of Management and its adjacent disciplines, and to lead in the generation and dissemination of knowledge in the wider Mediterranean region, for the benefit of academia, industry and society at large.
The Informatics Security Lab (ISL) is part of the Computer Science department at University of Nicosia. Our mission is to improve the current state of security practices. We mainly focus on devising new techniques to detect cyberattacks by analyzing attack patterns and visualizing attack attempts in an intuitive manner. Our lab faculty is responsible for delivering numerous university security courses, at both the BSc and MSc levels, including network security (BSc), cryptography and network security (MSc), ethical hacking (MSc), cyber warfare (MSc), network defense and countermeasures (MSc).
The Innovative STS (Science-Technology-Society) Education Center (InSSTER) is a multidisciplinary research center consisting of researchers from different disciplines within the field of education, established as a Research Center under the Department of Education, UNIC. Four faculty members from the Department of Education (Maria Evagorou, Christiana Karousiou, Kyriakos Demetriou, Efi Nisiforou) and two researchers from the same department (Maria Vrikki and Evi Constantinidou) joined forces to strengthen the Departments’ research profile in the fields of STS research education with an emphasis on innovative and inclusive practices, entrepreneurship through dialogue and argumentation, science education, technology education and school development. InSSTER conducts funded state-of-the-art research under the umbrella of innovative and inclusive STS Education and participates in competitive EU calls and other external projects.
The Institute for Advanced Modelling and Simulation (IAMS) conducts research and development in Computational Science, aiming to advance scientific knowledge and emerging technologies across applications (Engineering, Medicine, Energy, and Environment).
The Institute For the Future (IFF) is a cross-disciplinary research institute at the University of Nicosia (UNIC) founded to explore the hypothesis that exponential technologies will cause rapidly accelerating societal change over the coming decades.
The Institute’s stated goal is to conduct research in current issues related to criminal justice, criminology, criminal law, evidence law, sexual offenders, sentencing, and human rights, to promote study, to organise lectures, seminars, and conferences.
The Institute of Public Security (IPS) is an interdisciplinary centre bringing together research and teaching staff from all Schools of the University of Nicosia (UNIC) with an interest in public security, community safety, criminal justice, crime, new forms of crime and new technologies, and international leaders in their respective fields, representing a variety of backgrounds, skills and approaches that were put together to create this unique professional training opportunity.
Law and Literature Lab
A permanent research laboratory, open to teaching staff members, researchers and undergraduate students, aiming at the study of the interrelations between law and literature. The Law and Literature Lab conducts regular discussion forums, public lectures, stage events etc. in this field.
The Mobile Systems Lab (MoSys Lab) is a laboratory under the Computer Science department at the University of Nicosia, engaged in the design, development, and evaluation of mobile networks, including sensor networks (WSNs), MANETs, and VANETs and MP2P programmable implementations. MoSys Lab was founded in January 2013 by Prof. Constandinos X. Mavromoustakis. The lab has 3 research associates and a number of students working on locally-funded and EU projects.
Non-coding RNA Research Lab
Non-coding RNA Research Laboratory (ncr-RESLA) aims to investigate the role of non-coding RNAs in human physiology at both basic and applied level. The laboratory is composed of a group of faculty members and students that work on non-coding RNAs. The main objective of the work performed in ncr-RESLA is to provide a better understanding of the biology of non-coding RNAs and utilize this knowledge for the improvement of human health.
The Phonetic Lab, affiliated with the Department of Languages and Literature (School of Humanities and Social Sciences), is a specialized facility equipped with resources and equipment dedicated to the study and analysis of speech sounds, their production, and acoustic properties. It primarily serves researchers such as linguists, psychologists, and speech-language pathologists, who investigate various aspects of human speech and language. Currently, the Lab collaborates with a wide network of individual researchers and several international academic societies, organizations, and labs. The Director of the Lab is Dr. Georgios Georgiou, Assistant Professor of Linguistics.
The Procedural Law Unit at UNic was established in 2019 with the aim of providing scientific research on procedural law and on private and public dispute resolution mechanisms as well as criminal law (civil, criminal and administrative procedural law). The activities of the Unit include academic research, the preparation of expert reports, the organisation of conferences, seminars, lectures, conferences, discussions as well as trainings of informative and interventional nature in the area of the administration of justice in Cyprus, in legal traditions directly or indirectly related to Cypriot law such as Greek law, European law, and international law. In this context, the Unit’s research profile crosses the boundaries of Cypriot law as it is interested in developments on procedural law in both national and international level. The Unit may also cooperate with other research centres in Cyprus, in Europe and internationally.
The Research Centre for Exercise and Nutrition (RECEN) is a multidisciplinary research centre consisting of scientists from different life and health sciences disciplines. RECEN research aims to conduct high-quality and innovative research activities focusing on the role of exercise and nutrition on health and quality of life-related parameters in various population groups, including healthy people of all ages and patients with chronic diseases.
The Cyprus Linguistics and Humanities Research Group is affiliated with the Department of Languages and Literature of the University of Nicosia. It aims at promoting interdisciplinary high-quality research in Linguistics and the Humanities and at creating collaboration bonds with distinguished scholars.
