Free Online Info Session – What Makes a Song “Music to your Ears”: A Data Science Student Project

Music is a pervasive part of the human experience. Regardless of age, gender, religion or geographic location, we are exposed to music on a daily basis. Thanks to music streaming services, almost endless playlists of songs are now instantly accessible by using nothing more than just a smartphone and an internet connection. In this context, this online session explores what underlying factors (e.g., danceability) drive the popularity of certain songs and genres after performing an extensive data analysis of over 8 Million music streams collected from Spotify. Through all this data, we will explore if popular songs follow common patterns, are there any popular outliers (spoiler alert, Ed Sheeran is one), do people like speechless songs (yes!), what do people in different countries listen to, and more. To make this analysis possible, the Data Science process was adopted and through this webinar, we will elaborate on what stages did the analysis go through and certain tools that Data Scientists use.
