The Department of Architecture ARC of the University of Nicosia cordially invites you to a series of events under the umbrella of the New Distance Learning MSc Programme in Computational Design and Digital Fabrication offered in collaboration with the University of Innsbruck, Institute for Experimental Architecture Hochbau in Austria.

The programme aims at exploring the relationship between computational tools and architectural design, in an effort to attain a new insight into the relationship between design intent and built form. The MSc CDDF curriculum is uniquely structured to combine distance learning education with face to face learning. Within this scope the participants have the opportunity to develop computational design skills and acquire hands-on cutting-edge fabrication experiences, while cultivating analytical and creative thinking on the applications of computation in design.

Each Academic Semester concludes with a fabrication workshop were participants are called to visit University of Nicosia F-Lab and University of Innsbruck, Robotic Lab (REXLAB) respectively to participate in an intensive two-week workshop with a thematic that changes every year depending on the overall programme brief, interests of faculty and visiting specialists. These intensive courses add flexibility to the curriculum, encourage the development of a hands-on collaborative culture and provide a productive close to the semester. A series of parallel events such as visits, discussions, lectures and presentations frame the workshops to enrich the energetic atmosphere and to maximize educational benefits.

The first event taking place on Wednesday December 4th, will feature a series of short presentations (15 min each) on the thematic of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication.

Presentations:

– Seamlexity | Advanced Geometry Integration – Odysseas Georgiou

About Odysseas Georgiou

Odysseas Georgiou is a computational design engineer and an adjunct faculty at the [ARC] University of Nicosia. He has graduated from the School of Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. After his studies he joined Buro Happold to work as a structural engineer. During practice he developed a special interest in complex architectural forms and their integration with structure, which he investigated through a series of projects along with renowned Architectural practices. He was then funded by Buro Happold and the Happold Trust to join the Digital Architectonics MPhil program at the University of Bath, UK. His research described interactive approaches to reinventing architectural forms based on their structural performance. Odysseas is a founding member and director at SEAMLEXITY an architectural geometry practice in Cyprus. Odysseas is a lead computational designer in many complex architectural projects in Cyprus. – VR Workflows – Andreas Prokopiou

About Andreas Prokopiou

Andreas Prokopiou has received his BSc and Professional Diploma in Architecture (honours) from the Department of Architecture [ARC] of University of Nicosia in 2017. He also holds a BSc in Renovation and Restoration of Buildings from the Technical University of Patras in Greece. He has worked for Luca Moretto Architecture Office in Turin as an intern and in several architecture offices in Cyprus. He has participated in international competitions while he was recently awarded with the European Architectural Medal for Best Diploma Project 2017 (1st prize). Andreas has a strong academic background and interest in computational design and Building Information Modelling and he is currently working as a digital designer at SEAMLEXITY.

– ZEBRA | Mari Memorial – Michalis Georgiou

About Michalis Georgiou

Michalis Georgiou is an assistant professor (programme co-coordinator) at the Department of Architecture [ARC] of the University of Nicosia in the field of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication. He is a practicing architect/founding member of HUB design platform and SEAMLEXITY. He holds an MSc in Adaptive Architecture and Computation from the Barlett and a MArch from NTUA. His current research focuses in developing and applying computational tools in assisting and enriching design and construction processes. Before moving on to realize his own professional collaborations and projects Michalis has worked with Foster + Partners in London, as a design architect and design analyst, member of the Specialist’s Modeling Group. He is a registered Architect in ARB/UK and ETEK/Cyprus, while his work has received numerous local and international distinctions including the state architecture award and a recent nomination for the European Union Mies Van Der Rohe prize.
