Seminar 5: “Introduction to Quantitative Research”

In this presentation, Prof. Menelaos Apostolou will attempt to demonstrate the usefulness of using quantitative research methods in conducting research in social sciences. In particular, he will discuss research methods such as survey research, demonstrating how they can help us answer questions that qualitative research cannot. An integral part of quantitative research is statistical analysis, so he will discuss different statistical techniques including factor analysis and inferential statistical tests, to demonstrate how they can enable us to process the data gathered by quantitative research methods. He will base his presentation on a research project he has recently completed, namely why people are single. He will discuss how he has employed findings from qualitative research to construct and run a quantitative survey, and how he applied specific statistical techniques to address specific questions which enabled us to understand the phenomenon in question.
