Profile of the Programme

Aims and Objectives for the Exercise Science and Physical Education program:

  • Provide graduates the opportunities to develop professional skills, including monitoring, analysing, evaluating and prescribing exercise interventions for optimising sports performance and improving public health status and/or cultivating modern sports pedagogy methods in PE sectors.
  • Give graduates the opportunity to develop and custom their knowledge, both practical and theoretical, to better handle complex situations in exercise science and physical education settings and in sport and it is suitable for those who may wish to combine professional activity and education.
  • Provide graduates with an advanced academic and applied knowledge of the scientific principles underpinning optimal performance in sport and exercise, health and well-being through physical activity, and modern pedagogical teaching methods skills in PE.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the program in Exercise Science and Physical Education have a wide range of skills, as well as practical/applied knowledge in real conditions. After completing their studies students work as:

  • Teachers / Physical Education teachers
  • Fitness coaches (Academies, teams, groups)
  • Personal performance advisors for athletes
  • Fitness instructors in various healt promotion and fitness settings
  • Coaching stuff in sports academies, clubs and associations
  • Sports development consultants (e.g. local government)

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the programme can be accepted into Third Cycle degrees (Doctoral Degree)

Admission Criteria

The minimum general requirement for admission to the post-graduate degree programme is a Bachelor Degree from a recognised university.

  • A completed application form;
  • Copies of BSc/BA degree(s) and official transcripts;
  • Academic Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in Sports Science, Physical Education or related fields in life sciences, health and exercise.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation from a person who knows the candidate.
  • Personal Statement: A letter stating the candidate’s individual skills and abilities, his / her short bio, as well as his / her expectations from the program and the way in which he / she will help him / her in his / her personal development and career development.

English Language Proficiency.

Students satisfy the English requirements if their first degree was taught in English. Otherwise, they would need to present a minimum TOEFL score 500 and above, or GCSE (or GCE) English Language “O” Level of “C” or above or IELTS of 6.0 and above. The University offers English courses at various levels to help students reach the required standard for admission to a graduate program.

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects and class participation.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

Graduation Requirements

The student must complete 90 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

Upon successful completion of this program, the students should be able to:

  1. Provide a flexible, innovative, accessible, outward looking program with remarkable impact, in accordance with the Academic Vision Statement of the University of Nicosia.
  2. Develop and promote sport and exercise practitioners and modern physical educators with a critical and enquiring approach to their designated delivery setting alongside an applied proficiency with respect to professional practice and skills.
  3. Nurture self-directed and self-motivated sport, exercise, education and health practitioners, who through the application of advanced practical, intellectual, analytical and problem solving skills will be able to provide an advanced level of knowledge and professionalism in the exercise, sport, educational and health settings.
  4. Develop the research literacy of students including training in qualitative, quantitative and mixed research techniques and methodologies; promoting an ethical, evidence based approach to professional delivery of services in the sport, exercise, PE and health sectors.
