Ms Markella Menikou

Markella Menikou is an Associate Professor and is the Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Nicosia.

She received a BA (Hons) in Architecture with First Class in 2000, and a Bachelor of Architecture with Distinction in 2003 from the Manchester School of Architecture. In 2007 she completed an MA in Bioclimatic Architecture from the same university. She received scholarships and funding from the Cypriot Government and in the UK for high academic achievement.

She taught at the Manchester School of Architecture from 2003 to 2007, as a Lecturer in Architectural Technology. She has been the Head of BA Technology since September 2006, an administrative role where she was solely responsible for the organization and overseeing of the subject of Technology as a whole across the 3 years of the BA(Hons) Architecture degree. Working at the MSA, one of the leading and largest architecture schools in the UK, has provided her with an unrivalled experience of academic teaching and administrative skills.

In the UK she developed initiatives between the university and professional bodies in Manchester and was a Council committee member of the Manchester Society of Architects, 2004-2007.

In parallel to her academic involvement, she has been involved in professional practice since 2000 (A.E.W Architects, Manchester, UK) and has qualified as a RIBA Chartered Architect in the UK, following graduation from the Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture [RIBA Part3] in 2004. She has extensive professional experience in the UK, ranging from small-scale refurbishment projects to large-scale project management and contract administration.

She worked at international firm Scott Brownrigg Architects, Limassol for a year and since her re-settlement in Cyprus in 2007 she has also been working as a freelance architect. Since 2011 she is a Specialised Expert for Certificates of Energy Output for Buildings in Cyprus.

She presented her personal work and research at several conferences and publications. She represented Cyprus in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008 with the project ‘Easylove’. Her current research interests include instrumental architecture, technology as an operational language in architecture, prefabricated building systems, buildability and sustainability
