Elena Philippou PhD, RD, FHEA is an Associate Professor in Nutrition-Dietetics at the University of Nicosia (UNIC), Cyprus and a Visiting Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London, UK.
Dr Philippou is the BSc Nutrition co-coordinator and teaches a number of courses both at the BSc Nutrition-Dietetics course and the MSc Dietetics course, including Public Health Nutrition, Nutritional Assessment, Medical Nutrition Therapy and Contemporary Issues in Nutrition. Dr Philippou is also the course leader of the Public Health Nutrition course of the MSc Public Health (Distance Learning course) under UNIC Medical School and also delivers nutrition-related lectures at UNIC’s Medical School.
Dr Philippou’s research focuses on diet for prevention of degenerative disease, and more specifically, the effects of the Mediterranean diet and carbohydrate manipulation on cognitive function, cardiometabolic factors and rheumatic disease, aiming to identify dietary factors that can prevent disease and/or improve outcomes. In addition to research publications in international journals, she is also the Editor of the book ‘Glycemic Index: Applications in Practice’ (CRC Press).
She has a number of National and International collaborations including with the Cyprus Institute of Genetics and Neurology, the Centre of Applied Neuroscience at the University of Cyprus, Cyprus Technology University, and is an active member of the Cyprus Nutrition and Dietetic Association, the UK’s Nutrition Society and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr Philippou also has extensive experience as a registered dietitian and actively practices advising adults and children on diet-related issues
