The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) Newsletter

Welcome to the 8th edition of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Newsletter. We have come to the end of the 2023–2024 academic year and students and faculty look forward to a well-deserved summer break. For students, the summer break is an opportunity to rest and recharge their batteries in preparation for the new academic year. For faculty, the summer is an opportunity to take a break from everyday academic activities, but also a time to focus on exciting scholarly activities like authoring publications and attending conferences.

As with previous editions of our School’s Newsletter, this issue contains information about books and articles published (recent and forthcoming), workshops and symposia organised, competitions, research projects, conferences organised and/or attended by faculty, field trips and site visits organised to enrich our students’ learning experiences, and activities organised by Departments to promote their work and connect with the wider community.

In addition, in this issue we dedicate a section to world-renowned graphic designer Professor Neville Brody, who will be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Nicosia (2 July), where he will also receive an Honorary Doctorate from the School. On 3rd July, Professor Brody will deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Free Me from Freedom’, during which he will present his new book and design work, focusing on key themes around creativity, democracy and risk taking.

A sincere thank you to all colleagues who have enriched his edition of the Newsletter with their projects, publications and activities. The Editorial Committee and I look forward to receiving submissions for future editions of the SHSS Newsletter. We look forward to continue disseminating the rich multidisciplinary work and achievements of our School to the wider academic community.

With best wishes,
Professor Ioulia Papageorgi
