On 9 December 2010, at a ceremony held at the UNESCO amphitheatre on the University of Nicosia (UNIC) campus, the UNIC Medical School was launched with the announcement of the academic partnership between UNIC and St George’s, University of London (SGUL), to offer the SGUL MBBS degree to local and international students, with the support of Sheba Medical Center in Israel for the clinical training of medical students.
At the ceremony the leadership of the three institutions presented the ambitious plans for a high quality medical school, attracting talented students from around the world, while contributing to new knowledge through biomedical and clinical research, and upgrading the level of medical care on the island.
The Minister of Health offered his and the Government’s support to this endeavour, in the presence of the High Commissioner of the UK, the Ambassador of the State of Israel, the Presidents of the Cyprus Medical Association and the Cyprus Medical Council, representatives of patient associations, prospective faculty members of the new School, and other distinguished guests.
This was a bold initiative for establishing the first medical school in the country. We mark this day with a sense of pride for all the accomplishments of our students, alumni, faculty and staff, as we look forward to the second decade of the UNIC Medical School.
