The University of Nicosia announced on 1 August 2022 that Professor Andreas Charalambous has been promoted to the new post of Executive Vice President, Health. The new position, created by the Council of the University, will support the strategic development of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences under the umbrella of UNIC Health.
Andreas Charalambous joined UNIC in 1997 and has substantially helped the University to become a high quality, sustainable academic institution. He established the Department of Biomedicine, which was the predecessor of the Department of Life and Health Sciences, and served as its first Chair. During his tenure as Director of Research and Dean of Enrolment Management, he helped UNIC progress towards high quality entry admissions and enrolment services and develop significant research outcomes.
In 2011, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of establishing the first Medical School in Cyprus through important strategic partnerships with high quality universities and hospitals abroad. Since then, the Medical School has excelled in all the pillars that underpin the University’s ethos, namely top tier teaching and learning, research, innovation and contribution to society and culture. Equally importantly, the Medical School has been extremely successful with regards to attracting a large number of talented students and significantly contributing to the sustainability of the University.
More recently, Andreas has been working on developing the concept of One Health, an interdisciplinary approach that combines human health, animal health and public health. In line with this concept, he conceived and worked closely with Professor Stavros Malas, to establish the first School of Veterinary Medicine in Cyprus, a dream that came true during this academic year.
As a result of assuming his new duties, Andreas has stepped down as Executive Dean of the Medical School. According to University regulations, elections will take place to fill the post of the Dean of the Medical School. Until the election of the new Dean, Professor Adonis Ioannides, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, will serve as Interim Dean, and Professor Joseph Joseph, Chair of Clinical Education, will serve as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
