Join us for the screening of a film which explores tuberculosis in the 1930s in Cyprus.
Despite modern treatments, tuberculosis remains a global public health concern, affecting millions worldwide. This event will feature the short film directed by Argyro Nicolaou, ‘Athalassa’, highlighting Dr Takis Evangelides, a key figure in combating tuberculosis in Cyprus during that era.
Following the screening, a panel discussion led by Evis Bagdades, Clinical Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UNIC Medical School will explore the historical context, social implications, and medical advancements related to tuberculosis, drawing parallels with current public health challenges.
Film Director Argyro Nicolaou will discuss the challenges of making the film and share insights gained through her research.
Additionally, Ioannis Evangelides, the son of the late Dr Evangelides, and one of the film’s producers, will share his experiences growing up in a family with a doctor who treated tuberculosis patients.
FILM SYNOPSIS
Cyprus, 1936. In the midst of a raging tuberculosis epidemic, a dedicated young doctor seeks inventive ways to save his patients’ lives and protect them from the disease’s social stigma. The film is adapted from a short autobiographical story by Dr Takis Evangelides, a Cypriot lung specialist who was a pioneer in the fight against TB in the 1930s and 40s, when the island was still a British colony.
