Christos Stylianides

Christos Stylianides is a Faculty Member in the Master of Public Health Programme focusing on the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) Public Health in Disaster, a programme developed through a partnership of the Medical School with the University of Oviedo in Spain and Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

Mr Stylianides, a Dental Surgeon, currently serves as a Member of the Parliament of the Hellenic Republic (since June 2023). His distinguished career includes serving as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of Greece (2023-2025) and as the inaugural Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of the Hellenic Republic (2021-2023).

As the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management (2014-2019), Mr Stylianides greatly contributed to the EU’s global role as a ‘soft power’ and was characterised as the ‘humanitarian face of Europe’ across the globe. During this period, he also served as EU Ebola Coordinator, appointed by the European Council, where he coordinated all European policies and the EU’s and Member States’ responsible services during critical outbreaks.

His extensive public service includes roles as Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Cyprus (2013-2014 and 1998-1999) and Member of the House of Representatives of Cyprus (2006-2013). He is recognised as the ‘architect’ of rescEU, an initiative that significantly enhanced the European civil protection system.

Mr Stylianides has held prestigious academic positions as Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics’ Department of Health Policy and the Ruhr Universität Research School of Germany. He also served as EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief (2021).

Throughout his career, he has played a key role in strengthening the Humanitarian-Development Nexus, establishing better connectivity between humanitarian and development efforts to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
