Panagiotis Karanis is a Professor of Anatomy and Coordinator of Unit of Anatomy and Morphology at the University of Nicosia Medical School.

A resourceful and dedicated professor with an outstanding academic background, excellent publication record and significant teaching experiences in human anatomy and infectious diseases. Possesses worldwide excellent interpersonal and liaison skills to build and maintain positive working relationships. Formerly, Professor and PI at the Medical Faculties at Bonn and Cologne Universities in Germany, at the National Research Center for Protozoan Diseases of Japan, Agriculture University and Veterinary Medicine of the Obihiro University in Japan and Professor and Director of the Center for Biomedicine and Infectious Diseases at the State Key Laboratory for Plateau Ecology and Agriculture at the Qinghai University, Xining, China. PhD in Parasitology (Bonn University) with a background in disinfection of parasites. Habilitation in Parasitology (Medical Faculty Bonn University in clinical theoretical medicine section) with knowledge of waterborne parasitic diseases outbreaks and epidemiology. Has been working in medical, epidemiological, molecular parasitology and tropical diseases, considering both the pathogen and the disease—significant teaching experiences in human anatomy, with its main divisions, macroscopic (gross) anatomy, microscopic anatomy, neuroanatomy, and human embryology.

Human macroscopic anatomy mainly based on post-mortem autopsy data, training of medical doctors in corpses and fresh cadavers.  He taught numerous courses during the preclinical education of medicine at Cologne Medical School on all topics. Practical Courses in Clinical Anatomy of the upper (Hands) and lower (Feet) Extremities for medical students at the 8th Clinical Semester. Offered lectures in tropical Medicine for students in the clinical part of the medical curriculum. He participated in practical courses for clinical doctors together with clinicians to train them in clinical diagnostic and surgery methods.

Author of 160+ Scopus-indexed articles, counting about 9354 citations and a h-index of 48, managed more than 60 research projects with over ten million euros. According to a team of researchers at Stanford University in the USA, Professor Panagiotis Karanis has been included on the annual list of 100,000 top scientists worldwide and in the top 2% of scientists in their field. His research profile focuses on developing diagnostic methods to control emerging, reemerging and neglected waterborne, food-borne and vector-borne diseases, including diagnostic tools for preventing such parasitic illnesses combined with climate and demographic changes—worldwide interdisciplinary collaborations to contribute to the “One World – One Health” concept.
