Profile of the Programme

The purpose of this Pre-registration Nursing is to educate nursing students using theory and practice-based knowledge, enabling the graduates to achieve Professional registration as a First Level.

It is a 4-year, full-time programme, with a total of 4600 hours of learning incorporating both theory and practice equally balanced (2300 theory and 2300 practice) (EU/2005/36EC).

On completion of the programme the nurse will be able to demonstrate and use their practical skills. They will be able to apply their knowledge, skills and critical thinking to perform to the standards required for employment. The nurse will be able to use evidence-based knowledge to improve the care provision for patients and for their own personal and professional development.

The programme provides a body of knowledge originating from a wide range of topics which underpin the curriculum themes (e.g. Provision of Nursing Care, Life Long Learning, Management of Care and Clinical Effectiveness, Professional Practice, Biological Perspectives and Psychosocial Perspectives) and are embedded in health.

Career Prospects

The graduates of the programme can be involved in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary health care either as nurses in the Public and Private sector or as self-employed, multipurpose nurses for general care, within the guidelines of their professional rights.
Additional opportunities can be found with the following employers:

  • the National Health Service (NHS)
  • private sector clinics and hospitals
  • voluntary organizations
  • local authorities (for work in nursing and residential homes)
  • schools and further and higher education institutions
  • industry
  • prisons and the armed forces
  • private sector organizations, such as leisure cruise companies and private nursing homes.

Also, they can be employed within any country of the European Union based on the directive 2005/36/EC, on the recognition of professional qualification as amended by Council Directive 2006/100/EC of 20th of November 2006 adopting certain directive in the field of freedom of movement of persons by reason of accession.

Course assessment usually comprises a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include, amongst others, mid-terms, projects, etc.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades, the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.
