One of the leading universities in the area of Health
The School of Life and Health Sciences is devoted to the generation of new understanding and knowledge of the principles of Life and Health. Based on this knowledge, the School attempts to address the various current and future challenges in the area.
Living organisms are complex entities both at their molecular and macroscopic levels, and the complex networks embedded in them regulate diverse functions with significant impact on health and disease. As such the research goal of the School is to bridge a variety of diverse disciplines ranging from molecular biology to health care provision and to generate new knowledge in both basic and applied science. The Faculty of the School of Life and Health Sciences aims at developing an interaction with local and international research institutions as well with the industry to address everyday challenges in the area of Human Health.
Cutting Edge Research
The School employs a multidisciplinary approach in research that effectively utilises the variety of disciplines of the faculty. With the ultimate goal to improve human health, the faculty carries out both basic and applied research encompassing the latest technological advancements in science to address today’s and future societal challenges.
Research Areas
Areas of interest include among others personalised medicine through the use of artificial intelligence and virtual reality tools, isolation and synthesis of bioactive molecules from natural products, biomarkers discovery, design of novel drug delivery systems and advanced nutritional and exercise regimes for chronic diseases.
Research Establishments
Three research establishments are currently operational under the School:
- Research Centre for Exercise and Nutrition (RECEN)
- Bioactive Molecules Research Centre (BioMoReC)
- Non-coding RNA Research Laboratory (ncr-RESLA
International Collaborations and Initiatives
UNIC has become an ordinary member of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute (VPH), a non-profit organisation incorporated in Belgium, whose mission is to ensure that the Virtual Physiological Human is fully realised, universally adopted, and effectively used both in research and clinic. VPH is the Coordinator of the EDITH project, which is the EU initiative for the Human Virtual Twins, an application of AI in human physiology.
