School of Veterinary Medicine announces the launch of the renovated equine clinic

We are pleased to announce that the Equine Clinic at the Nicosia Race Club is now complete and ready for use by students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programme. The official inauguration will take place on 5 May 2025.

This significant upgrade results from a partnership between the University of Nicosia and the Nicosia Race Club, following an agreement signed in October 2023. The School of Veterinary Medicine now manages the clinic, which serves as both an educational and research centre.

Renovations have upgraded the infrastructure and equipment to enhance care quality for horses and support the professional training of veterinary students, ensuring the facility meets modern veterinary standards.

As a managed facility of the School of Veterinary Medicine, the clinic provides an invaluable learning environment where students can develop hands-on skills vital for their careers.

Stavros Yiannikouris, Clinical Assistant Professor of Equine Medicine and Surgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine, stated, ‘The clinic includes a surgical suite where students can observe and participate in various equine surgical procedures. In addition, with the sophisticated diagnostic equipment now available, students can assess a range of equine health issues using advanced tools and methodologies’.

To strengthen its clinical and educational capabilities, the School of Veterinary Medicine has appointed four equine focused veterinarians to the clinic, comprising Dr Kostakis Gamvroudiou, Dr Fotis Fotiou, Dr Vasilis Hatzivasilis and Dr Stavros Yiannikouris, who will conduct surgical procedures and provide expert clinical training to veterinary students.

The transformation of the Equine Clinic will support the equine industry and the broader veterinary field, contributing to students’ readiness to meet professional challenges.
