Dr Emilios A. Solomou

Dr Emilios A. Solomou, studied History at the University of Cardiff where he received his B.A (Hons). His postgraduate studies are in the field of History and History Methodology and Didactics. He received his Doctorate, from the University of Middlesex (U.K.) of which he is currently an Internal Examiner. He has been teaching Cyprus History on the M.A. in International Relations Programme, and Cyprus History and History Didactics on the B.A. in the Primary Education Programme, at the University of Nicosia. Dr Solomou is the President of the Cyprus Society of Historical Studies, member of the Historical Association of the United States, a Fellow of the Historical Association of Great Britain, a member of the National Council for History Education (USA), a member of the International Society for History Didactics, a member of the Board of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in History, Vice President of the Board of the Mass Media Institute (IMME), Vice President of the Board of the Cyprus Folk Museum, Vice President of the Board of the Cyprus Pedagogical Association, Member of the Hellenic Educational Society, Senior Fellow of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs of the University of Nicosia (CCEIA) as well as of many other Professional Associations and Organisations in Cyprus, the U.K and the U.S.A. He is the Managing Editor of the Cyprus Review.
Dr Emilios A. Solomou has published many articles and also edited the books «Colonial Cyprus 1878-1960» and «Independent Cyprus 1960-2010» with Prof. H. Faustmann, «Nikos Kazantzakis – Indigenous and Ecumenical», «Στο περιβόλι τ’ όμορφο της Μαντινάδας» (Cretan folk verses), «The Armenian Genocide and the Cyprus Press 1914-1923», “Crete and Cyprus: Crossroads of Nations and Civilizations”, “Eleftherios Venizelos” and “School Improvement: Teaching under Multicultural conditions” (Βελτιώνοντας το Σχολείο και τη Διδασκαλία σε Συνθήκες Πολιτισμικού Πλουραλισμού). His interests focus on the areas of History Didactics, Historiography and the History of Cyprus.
Dr Emilios A. Solomou served as the Director of the UNESCO Chair of the University of Nicosia from 2013 to 2023.
Dr Georgios Mavroides
Founder of the Chair and Former Director 2005-2013
Dr Georgios Mavroides, studied Psychology and Pedagogy as a scholar of the State Scholarship Foundation in Belgium and France. He served as a school advisor of Primary Education, as a consultant of the Pedagogical Institute, responsible for Early Childhood Education and as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Crete. He has also taught as a visiting professor in Greek and foreign universities. From 1995 to 2000 he served as an Education Advisor at the Permanent Representation of Greece to UNESCO in Paris. He was President of the Department of Primary Education of the Pedagogical Institute. From 2001 to 2012 he served as Dean of the School of Education of Intercollege at the beginning and of the University of Nicosia afterwards.
He was the founder and director of the first UNESCO Chair of the University of Nicosia in Cyprus (2005-2013), with subject: “Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue for a Culture of Peace”. Its scientific and research activities focus on Pre-Primary Education issues. He has published books and articles, independently or in collaboration, in Greek and French, has participated in many research projects and has presented various studies in pedagogical conferences in Greece and abroad. After his retirement from the University of Nicosia, he continues to collaborate with the UNESCO Chair of the same University and offers his services to cultural associations and foundations on a pro bono basis.
