Learning Environment at UNIC

We focus on offering Effective learning and teaching. Effectiveness in learning begins from the foundation of a good curriculum, where learning outcomes, assessment and feedback are all aligned. We offer an enhanced learning experience by equipping our students with the skills and literacies necessary for successful learning, and our academic staff with the knowledge, skills and methods for developing engaging teaching. We offer an innovative learning environment to support

Effective learnng. Students experience an open, learning environment with teachers and students usually co-construct knowledge. The traditional learning practices are replaced by a more collaborative approach, where students are active members of the learning procedure and their opinions valued and encouraged by more experienced peers. This approach encourages dialogue and collaboration between students and teachers and creates opportunities to bring forward new ideas and innovations.

The student is at the centre of the learning procedure. There is a lot of support in terms of pedagogy and the teachers make themselves available to help students and ensure course content is fully understood. Our pedagogical model employs the 21st century skills framework, emphasizing the high-level operational knowledge, competencies and personality qualities. Skills and competencies necessary to the 21st century citizen to survive and thrive. Such skills are: scientific and technological literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, metacognition, ability to work collaboratively, think creatively, synthesize information.

Brain Based Learning

Brain Based Learning

The theoretical foundations of our pedagogical model combine Brain Based approaches: teaching and learning methods, lesson designs, and programs that are based on the latest scientific research about how the brain learns, including such factors as cognitive characteristics, emotions and motivation

Multimodality

Multimodality

Several studies show that memory improves when more than one sense is stimulated at the same time. The ultimate expression of simultaneous and multimodal learning is learning by doing. When we learn by seeing and hearing, we remember 50% fourteen days later. But we remember 90% if we actually experience it. This means that simulations, such as role plays, are very effective in helping students learn new concepts

Interactivity

Interactivity

Interactive learning is a more hands-on, real-world process of relaying information in classrooms. Passive learning relies on listening to teachers lecture or rote memorization of information, figures, or equations. Interactive learning involves students’ interaction not only with the teacher but with each other as well.

Metacognition

Metacognition

Metacognition is another component of our teaching and learning model. It is a critically important, yet often overlooked component of learning. Effective learning involves planning and goal-setting, monitoring one’s progress, and adapting as needed. All of these activities are metacognitive in nature.

Relevance Connection with Real Life

Relevance Connection with Real Life

In our pedagogical model, the term relevance refers to learning experiences that are either directly applicable to the personal aspirations, interests, or cultural experiences of students (personal relevance) or that are connected in some way to real-world issues, problems, and contexts (life relevance).

Authentic Assessment

Authentic Assessment

In our pedagogical model we define authentic assessment as an approach to measure student performance in a direct, relevant way to see if the learning objectives were met. Our academic and teaching staff might use projects such as reports, journals, speeches, videos and interviews with the students to measure their understanding of the subject material.
