UNIC’s IFF Executive Director George Giaglis Joins the Meta Reality Labs Policy Advisory Council

The council advises Meta on the ethical and responsible development of the metaverse

The University of Nicosia is proud to announce that Professor George M. Giaglis, Executive Director of its Institute for the Future (IFF), has been invited to join the Meta Reality Labs Policy Advisory Council. This council provides Meta with insights and guidance on the ethical and responsible development of the metaverse, addressing complex public policy questions as Meta continues to innovate in cutting-edge technology and hardware.

Established in 2021, the Meta Reality Labs Policy Advisory Council plays a crucial role in advising Reality Labs teams throughout product and policy development. The council comprises a diverse group of experts, including developers, professors, academics, and civil society advocates from around the world, who bring extensive knowledge in areas such as privacy, youth safety, and disability advocacy.

It is noteworthy that UNIC/IFF offers the world’s first Master’s Degree in Metaverse, an interdisciplinary program delivered online. This cutting-edge program is designed to prepare innovators, creators, developers, architects, social scientists, financial professionals, policymakers, and others for dynamic careers in metaverse design and management. As a key component of the University of Nicosia’s Open Metaverse Initiative (OMI), the MSc in Metaverse is dedicated to fostering metaverse adoption through open public systems and standards. Leveraging the university’s decade-long leadership in blockchain and digital currency education, OMI is committed to advancing the metaverse into the future.

This collaboration will enable IFF to contribute to the development of a more open and inclusive metaverse, aligning with both the council’s mission and the university’s research interests.

About Professor George M. Giaglis

Professor George M. Giaglis is the Executive Director of the Institute for the Future at the University of Nicosia (UNIC). He teaches Web3, crypto, blockchain, and metaverse courses, and has been instrumental in designing the curriculum of the world’s first academic programs in this space: MSc in Blockchain & Digital Currency and MSc in Metaverse, both offered by UNIC. He has worked with institutional and corporate clients on blockchain and technology monitoring projects and is a member of Meta’s Reality Labs Policy Advisory Council. He has published twelve books and more than 150 scientific papers and is the Chief Editor of the Blockchain Technologies section at the Frontiers in Blockchain journal.
