University of Nicosia to design and implement a European-wide training course for CEPOL
The training will guide law enforcement officials, judges and prosecutors of EU member states and other non-EU countries through the basic concepts, techniques and players of money laundering and terrorist financing via cryptocurrencies
CEPOL, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training, has just selected the University of Nicosia (UNIC) to design and implement a course on “Financial Investigation on Virtual Currencies”.
The aim of the course is to enhance the capacity of specialised investigators to gather evidence, as well as trace, recover and manage virtual currencies. In addition, the course aims to contribute in fighting financial crimes by strengthening multidisciplinary cooperation in the context of financial investigations on cryptocurrencies, in particular by developing cooperation between law enforcement and judicial authorities.
UNIC was selected by CEPOL after achieving the highest rating within a group of bidders for this course, which will be designed specifically for law enforcement officials and judges/prosecutors of EU member states and other non-EU countries involved in cryptocurrency financial investigations.
The course will be implemented in the second quarter of 2022 by UNIC’s newly established Institute of Public, Cyber and National Security (IPCNS), in collaboration with the Institute For the Future (IFF). Both institutes are under the umbrella of UNIC.
According to Mr Zacharias Chrysostomou, Founder and Executive Director of IPCNS:
“We are very proud and honored to have been selected by CEPOL, in a very competitive process and selection criteria, to train law enforcement officials, judges and prosecutors of EU member states and other non-EU countries in fighting crime related to virtual currencies. UNIC is among a handful universities in the EU that have been selected as a partner to train EU law enforcement officials, which further strengthens our Institute’s scope in becoming a Centre of Excellence within the fields of Public, Cyber and National Security.”
UNIC has previously became the first university in Cyprus to become a CEPOL Framework Partner, tasked with implementing CEPOL’s training portfolio for four years (2021-2024).
The Institute of Public, Cyber and National Security (IPCNS) of the University of Nicosia is a newly established multidisciplinary Institute, founded in 2019 by the former Chief of Cyprus Police, Zacharias Chrysostomou. IPCNS has adopted an innovative, holistic approach bringing together the whole spectrum of disciplines which contribute to public and national security.
The Institute For the Future (IFF) is an interdisciplinary research Centre at the University of Nicosia, aimed at advancing emerging technologies and contributing to their effective application in industry, government and education, as well as evaluating their impact on employment, wealth inequality and our lives and societies in general.
University of Nicosia is ranked among the top 3% of universities in the world, according to the renowned Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. Moreover, UNIC is widely considered a world leader in cryptoassets and Blockchain education and research.
