On 4 October 2024, the School of Veterinary Medicine launched the first in a series of targeted seminars focused on Ruminant Health and Disease Control. The seminar, held at the ‘Konstantineleneion’ Education Centre in Athienou, Larnaca, was organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Athienou Veterinary Clinics to address pertinent health issues affecting livestock in Cyprus.

Dr Manos Vlasiou, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, opened the session emphasising the University’s commitment to advancing veterinary science in support of Cyprus’s agricultural sector. He noted the critical need for continuous knowledge exchange between academia and practitioners to address emerging health challenges within livestock populations.

The programme commenced with Associate Professor Konstantinos Arsenopoulos, who delivered a presentation on the ’Parasites of Ruminants‘. Clinical Associate Professor Daphne Mavridou presented her findings on ’Cryptosporidiosis in Cattle Farming Units in Cyprus‘ and Associate Professor Eleni Gentekaki delivered a presentation on the ’Microbiome of Ruminants‘.

The seminar concluded with a question-and-answer session, led by Dr Vlasiou, where attendees discussed practical challenges specific to their operations and sought clarification on the material presented. The next seminar of the series is planned before the end of 2024.
