BRIEF SUMMARY

One Health is an integrative concept that links the health of humans, other animals, and the environment. Central to the wellbeing of these interconnected spheres are microbial communities, commonly known as microbiomes. The intestinal microbiome, representing the most extensive microbial community within living hosts, has direct links to environmental health. Recently, gut microbial eukaryotes have been identified as emerging contributors, with their effects only beginning to be understood.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Eleni Gentekaki is an Associate Professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Nicosia. She holds a BSc in Human Kinetics, a Master’s in Immunology, and a PhD in Eukaryotic Microbiology from the University of Guelph in Canada.

Her research interests include microbial diversity and microbial ecology. She is particularly focused on conducting microbiome and ecology studies that revolve around humans, animals, and the environment, emphasizing the One Health perspective.
