INVITATION TO INTRODUCTORY LECTURE

Intestinal microbial eukaryotes, microbiomes and One Health

by Dr Eleni Gentekaki, Associate Professor, UNIC School of Veterinary Medicine

BRIEF SUMMARY

One Health is an integrative concept that links the health of humans, other animals, and the environment. Central to the wellbeing of these interconnected spheres are microbial communities, commonly known as microbiomes. The intestinal microbiome, representing the most extensive microbial community within living hosts, has direct links to environmental health. Recently, gut microbial eukaryotes have been identified as emerging contributors, with their effects only beginning to be understood.
